Monreal - Spain still have the hunger

Monreal - Spain still have the hunger

Nacho Monreal says the Spanish national squad is as hungry as ever for success - despite winning the last three major tournaments.
Once considered perennial underachievers, Spain have been in the ascendancy since they lifted the European Championship in 2008. The country's first World Cup followed two years later and Spain retained their European crown last year.
Whispers of their possible decline began when Brazil overpowered the world champions in this year's Confederations Cup final but Spain are in excellent shape in a tough World Cup qualifying group - needing just one win from their final two fixtures to reach Brazil 2014.
I see the players that still have great desire, a lot of hunger to win another World Cup, and that is very positive
And Monreal, who has 14 caps for his country, says Spain's appetite for silverware has not diminished.
"The national side has been on a positive run for many years now and it is difficult to achieve that, especially [winning] one after the other," Monreal told Arsenal Player.
"Aside from that, the manager is maintaining the same group, it is always the same team getting together with three or four new faces, but the group is basically the same, and the desire and the ambition to win another World Cup is still there.
"It is true that there can be some moments of taking it easy, there can be, but it really depends on us the players.
"We need to continue being ambitious, to want to win another World Cup, and logically we want to carry on in that form. I can vouch for that because I have been part of the group, I see the players that still have great desire, a lot of hunger to win another World Cup, and that is very positive."

Wenger - My tips for the World Cup

Wenger - My tips for the World Cup

Arsène Wenger thinks Brazil and Germany are the front-runners to win the World Cup in 2014.
Hosts Brazil are currently the bookmakers' favourites to win the tournament for the sixth time with Germany, Argentina and Spain also widely fancied.
The Frenchman believes home advantage could be a deciding factor but stopped short of ruling out the holders from retaining their crown.
You can't dismiss Spain because they have been so consistent and have such an experience in their side that you could say they will still be there
Arsène Wenger
"Brazil plays at home in South America so usually it's a South American team who wins there," Wenger told Arsenal Player. "That will be a huge disappointment if Brazil don't win it and Germany could be the surprise maybe this time.
"You can't dismiss Spain because they have been so consistent and have such an experience in their side that you could say they will still be there.
"They have won two European Championships and the World Cup so they have already done something exceptional.
"You think can they push on to the World Cup? If they do, that is really the biggest team ever in the history of football if they manage to do that."
Belgium, who need just one point to secure their place in the finals, have been tagged as dark horses to go all the way next year but Wenger thinks the competition will come too early for Marc Wilmots' side
"I think they might need one World Cup experience to really get there and think we have the quality to do it," he said.
"It takes a little time but maybe for the next European Championship in France 2016 they will be one of the main contenders because if you look at the quality of their team and the names in their team it's absolutely amazing."
